Survey on hygiene inspection practices regarding fishing vessels in European Union

Responsible partner: National Institute of Public Health, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid, Spain

The objective of this survey was to identify the practices regarding fishing vessels (reporting requirements, inspection practices, and standards) and in particular to define the objectives, to identify the data providers, design the data collection tools, collect data, record and analyse data and produce a report with recommendations.

The survey results indicate that:

  • Almost half of the countries have not specific legislation for inspection on fishing vessels.
  • Most of the countries do not perform regular inspections.
  • Most of the countries mentioned that there is not information available for issuance of Ship Sanitation Certificate.
  • 7 out of 12 countries require reporting health events.
  • 5 out of 7 countries use the Maritime Declaration of Health.

A scientific publication is under preparation and will include all survey results in detail.
